The River
An archetype for age and currency
The River
A baby giggles at a star
A running child trips and hurts their knee
A youth discovers a broken chain
A young traveller rows in search of fortune
While another births ashore to eat
A young mother nestles her first born
She comforts in a well worn jumper
An elder treasures each ray of sunlight
As he leisures along the sands
Looking forward to his nap

The river as a metaphor for ageing is as old as time. From the purity of spring water to the merging into the sea, it represents different ages from birth to death.

Yet, the art of ageing is to regard life as a series of cycles or spirals. We think in linear paths because that is our conscious perception, whether a day, a lifetime, a relationship, career or a project. At the end of a line is fear of the abyss. Yet after our conscious day, we sleep at night and awake afresh to a new day. The same cycle is true of relationships, careers and projects where the ending of one allows space for another. This offers comfort about life itself and accepting our own passing. The art of ageing is to let go and embrace your dreams.

The Cloud
An elder's eye waters as he naps
He dreams he flies towards the sky
And floats above hand in hand
With fellow souls who look below
As night falls they see no more
But deep inside forever young
A baby giggles at a star
